Shipping Container History Lesson

Port Tampa Bay, better known as The Port of Tampa, opened in 1924. Tampa has 8 million plus residents and more than 60 million visitors each year! It is one of the biggest markets in the Southeast US and one of the largest ports in FL. In fact, it is considered to be one of the most diversified ports in the United States due to handling of a large variety of imported and exported goods, including food and beverages, consumer products, automobiles, and agricultural products; cruise lines; tanker ships; and cargo ships. Port of Tampa is centrally located between Miami and Jacksonville and close to the center of the state. It is overseen by the Tampa Port Authority. The port currently has approx. 5,000 acres with future expansion in the works.

Tampa Port Capabilities

Tampa is continuing to expand its container services and terminal facilities, recently adding 2 state of the art cranes adding to the existing 3. These cranes can handle vessels up to 9,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent) capacity, which is used to measure a ship’s cargo capacity. Some of the advantages that the port has included a deeper water channel, at a depth of 43 feet (13 meters), over 1 million square feet of warehouse space, and a 130,000 square foot refrigerated warehouse.

Economic Impact & Job Growth

A recent study shows that the economic growth in Tampa has increased significantly creating and supporting more than 85,000 jobs in the area, from welders to maritime attorneys to crane operators. With future plans to expand the port, this will certainly create the demand for more job opportunities.
